New Rotman School Program Gives Executives a Roadmap to the Business of Artificial Intelligence.

January 29, 2018

Toronto – A new three-day intensive course at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management on the business of artificial intelligence (AI) will introduce executives to the opportunities and risks associated with this new technology.

The Rotman School’s Creative Destruction Lab and Executive Programs will present the course on March 27 to 29. It is based on "Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence," a new book to be published by Harvard Business Review Press in April 2018.

"AI may transform your life. And Prediction Machines will transform your understanding of AI. This is the best book yet on what may be the best technology that has come along," says Larry Summers, Harvard Professor and former US Treasury Secretary, former Chief Economist of the World Bank, and former president of Harvard University.

The three Rotman School professors who authored the book will deliver the course.

Ajay Agrawal is the Peter Munk Professor of Entrepreneurship and the Founder and Academic Director of the Creative Destruction Lab.

Joshua Gans is the Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair in Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Chief Economist of the Creative Destruction Lab.

Avi Goldfarb is the Ellison Professor of Marketing and Chief Data Scientist of the Creative Destruction Lab.

AI is poised to infiltrate all industries and markets. Globally, AI skills are increasingly valuable. Businesses at the frontier have begun to take advantage of machine learning to grow and transform their strategies. But what is real and what is hype?

Leaders need a deep understanding of what AI can do in order to position their organizations for the upcoming wave of competition based on AI, similar in some ways to what we experienced 20 years ago with the arrival of the internet.

Participants will leave the course with a toolkit for introducing AI into their organization and learn how to design their organization to identify opportunities for implementing AI and then executing on the implementation.  Participants will learn how to coach their teams on how to determine when to build or buy AI tools to enhance the productivity of their existing operations. In addition, participants will discover how to develop strategies with their leadership team for leveraging the most powerful AI tools to transform their business strategy if and when appropriate.

The Creative Destruction Lab is a seed-stage program for massively scalable, science-based ventures. It employs a unique, objectives-focused coaching process to help founders commercialize advances in science and technology. The Lab also provides experiential learning to Rotman MBA students through year-long courses where students work alongside the Lab’s Fellows and venture founders, giving them a unique chance to learn how to evaluate, finance, and manage technology businesses.

Graduates of the Lab include Thalmic Labs (Waterloo), Atomwise (San Francisco), Deep Genomics (Toronto), Nymi (Toronto), Automat (Montreal), Kyndi (Palo Alto), and Heuritech (Paris). The Creative Destruction Lab was founded in 2012 at the Rotman School and now has additional programs at the UBC Sauder School of Business, the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, HEC Montreal and Dalhousie University. A new program will launch at the Stern School of Business at New York University in 2018. Last year the Lab in Toronto launched a new program focused on the creation of quantum machine learning startups.  More information is available at www.creativedestructionlab.com.
