Toronto – A professor of marketing at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management will be the first holder of the Rotman Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare.
Prof. Avi Goldfarb will be the first holder of the chair, which was established earlier this year by a generous gift from the Rotman family. The gift provided funding for three new faculty chairs and supports research and teaching that focuses on health sector challenges. The donation will also fund educational and leadership development for professionals in the healthcare and life sciences sector, including scholarships and bursaries in a range of Rotman School programs including the PhD, MBA, and the new Global Executive MBA in Healthcare & the Life Sciences (GEMBA-HLS) programs.
“We are starting to see more meaningful applications of artificial intelligence in a wide range of sectors,” says Dean Tiff Macklem. “AI is a powerful prediction machine and with this new chair, Prof. Goldfarb will explore its use in the healthcare sector.”
Goldfarb is a professor of marketing, the Chief Data Scientist at the Rotman School’s Creative Destruction Lab, Senior Editor at Marketing Science, a Fellow at Behavioral Economics in Action at Rotman, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a co-author of Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence, published earlier this year by Harvard Business Review Press. His research on the economics of technology has been discussed in White House reports, Congressional testimony, European Commission documents, the Economist, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, CBC Radio, National Public Radio, Forbes, the Atlantic, The New York Times, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere
The Rotman School has been a leader in healthcare management research through its Sandra Rotman Centre for Health Sector Strategy within the University of Toronto.
