MMA Admissions criteria

Are you the right fit?

The Master of Management Analytics is a practical degree designed for quantitatively strong students who have recently completed undergraduate studies.

Applicants must meet the following criteria

1. Appropriate four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent:

Four-year degree in a relevant degree such as, but not limited to, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science, Economics or Commerce.

Minimum mid-B average (3.0 on the U of T Scale) is required across courses in the final year. It is expected that the GPA of those admitted into the program will be higher than the minimum.

GPA’s are be calculated on the first undergraduate degree. If you have taken additional courses past graduation, or graduate studies those will be considered overall for your application but will not be used for your GPA calculation.

If you studied outside of Canada, consult the School of Graduate Studies’ site for GPA Conversion

2. Quantitative proficiency:

Evidence of a high level of proficiency (a minimum B average) in quantitative courses that cover subjects is required. Mastery of mathematics including, at a minimum, calculus and linear algebra, is essential, as are courses covering probability and statistics. In cases where evidence of quantitative proficiency is not obvious, applicants must provide supplemental evidence.

3. Computational proficiency:

Demonstrated proficiency in computer programming. This may be demonstrated through a minimum B average in one or more courses in computer science or in courses relying extensively on computer programming. In cases where evidence of computational proficiency is not obvious, applicants must provide supplemental evidence.

4.Prerequisites:

When we review MMA applications, we screen for knowledge of statistics and computer science. Before the program begins in August, admitted students must demonstrate their understanding of the following four areas:

  • Foundations of Finance
  • Financial Accounting
  • Statistics
  • Python

Foundations of Finance and Financial Accounting can be demonstrated through coursework in your undergraduate degree, or by passing CFA Level 1. If you have not completed coursework in these subjects, or do not have CFA Level 1, you can still receive an offer of admission that is conditional on passing a short qualifying assessment for each prerequisite that is missing. Contact us if you have further questions after reviewing the detailed prerequisite information.

Online assessments for both Statistics and Python are required. Rotman will make review materials available for those who receive a conditional offer of acceptance. You will be given access to both the review materials and the assessment. You may choose to write the assessment without reviewing the materials.

All prerequisites will be available shortly after you accept your offer to the MMA program. You will have until early July to complete the assessments.

5. English language proficiency:

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate in English in one of the following ways:

a) An undergraduate degree from a university at which the language of instruction and examination was English
b) Satisfactory performance on a standardized English Language Test. Minimum TOEFL score of 100 is required, with a minimum of 22 in both writing and speaking, or a minimum IELTS Academic Test with a score of 7.0 with at least 6.5 across all bands.

Note: results from the Special Home Edition of the Internet-based TOEFL Test (launched in select countries in March 2020) will be considered from applicants for this application cycle until further notice.

If you have studied at an English-language university outside of Canada, official confirmation of English as the language of instruction and examination from your university will be required.

6. Two academic references:

Two recommendation forms must be completed online by your referees. While both references should be academic, applicants who are applying with some work experience are welcome to submit one academic and one professional reference. We encourage you to have at least one reference from a professor who has taught you in a quantitative course.

7. Online application (includes written essay, video questions and real-time written response):

The application fee is $195 CAD.

8. GMAT/GRE

Demonstration of academic ability though high GMAT/GRE score is encouraged.

9. Admission interviews

All candidates who are admitted to the program will be interviewed. Interviews are by invitation only.

If you have any questions about your application, feel free to contact our recruitment and admissions team.
